ABOUT THE COURSE

The Welcome Home Program is a guided course for people in the first weeks and months after bringing a dog home. It is designed to help you understand what your dog is experiencing during transition and how your early choices shape stress, learning, behavior, and trust over time. Many adopters receive very little guidance about this phase, even though it is one of the most influential periods in a dog’s life.

Across seven modules, you will learn how stress accumulates, how to recognize when your dog needs more time, how to build safety before you ask for skills, and how to make thoughtful decisions that support long-term stability. The course is built around the same framework used throughout the program, including warm water, golf balls and rice, and the process of thawing back into themselves, all grounded in real patterns seen in newly adopted dogs.

This program is practical, calm, and realistic. You can move at your own pace, return to modules as your dog changes, and apply what you learn directly in your home. If you are early in life with a new dog, this course gives you a clear map of the transition and a way to build a relationship that lasts.

Ember Leash Dog Training was founded in 2023 by Skylar McClellan, whose passion for dog training ignited after discovering the profound impact on adopting a positive approach to his own dog, River. She deserved better from him. Discovering how to make that happen changed his life almost overnight.

After gaining some experience as a Behavior and Training Coordinator at a shelter, leading playgroups, providing adoption counseling, post-adoption support, in-shelter professional behavior modification, teaching classes to the public, all while mentoring under the amazing Michelle Rizzi of Handle With Care Dog Training, Skylar started his own in-home private dog training business. Now running Ember Leash Dog Training full-time, he serves clients all over the world virtually, and in-person clients throughout California's Central Coast, from Paso Robles to Orcutt, helping dogs and their families thrive.
